Champion of Cycle Diaries
Chapter III
Argh! The pain!
Our Champion fell off the bike the other day. In one of his maniac speeding attempts through a crossroad - the free-wheel jammed up – the chain tugged at it strongly – the free-wheel tried to recoil which jammed it all the more – broke – the chain was thrown off the gears – it jammed the chain wheel – his leg slipped off – got caught in the pedal’s free-reverse motion – he flew off the bike. All of this inside 20 seconds.
It must have been quite a sight. Not everyday do people get to see a rider such as him, and to be privileged to watch the spectacle of him piling up in the middle of the road is, definitely, an experience.
Champion was very upset. He scolded his bike - What the hell was that all about?! He looked at the mangled chain and free-wheel. He tried fixing the damage but the fall still had him in a little daze. People stood around watching this fallen hero. Enquiring about a cycle-repair shop in the neighbourhood, he set out to set things right.
It took a two kilometer hike to get the bike mended. He did pass six cycle shops of varying capabilities but Champion did not like his cycle touched by people he didn’t trust. And so he ended up at his regular service shop. It was a rather long walk and thankfully he had someone to talk to.
Champion: So my noble steed.. what is your problem exactly?
Noble Steed: Your asking me? I mean.. seriously.. what DO you think I am?!
Champion: What the hell is that supposed to mean?
Noble Steed: You get so obsessed with yourself and your want of achievement that you don’t realize when to stop. You just want to go for it all, all the time. Don’t you see I have limitations?! I am a machine!
Champion: So? Even I have limitations. The point is - never give up! Push yourself to newer levels each time.
Noble Steed: Your crazy!
Champion: Why? Just because I refuse to stop trying? Because I do not pay heed to the fear of failure?
Noble Steed: But things break when pushed too far! People break! I broke!
Champion: Machines break. People don’t. It is the fear of failure that makes people stop trying. The difference between you and I is not that of life. It is that of a strong mind and the control of that mind over every working facet of my body. No disrespect dear friend, but this is why I will always be the rider.
And my beloved noble steed, I swear to you, the day my mind gives in to my body, I will stop riding.
