Champion of Cycle Diaries
Chapter II
Our Champion is in love and not surprisingly, with two pretty young girls. Twins to be precise.
The other day as he rode to work, our rider passed two very good looking girls waving out to him. They had the prettiest of smiles, long ruffled-up hair and gorgeous white and pink dresses. To be honest, he wasn’t expecting this attention. Atleast not so suddenly!
The bright-coloured bike and helmet have always sought attention for him. That day was no exception. The twins saw our hero cycling his way through traffic as he came towards them. And presumably, they too were quite ‘excited’ to see this cycling enthusiast. As he wound his way around another out-of-lane three wheeler, the girls saw him up-front and close. They waved out to him and despite his speed through the traffic, Champion didn’t miss that sight.
The two girls were probably five-six years old. Identical to the last strand of their hair. They were even dressed the same. The both waved with their right hands and smiled identical smiles. Though he caught them out of the corner of his eye, Champion smiled back at them. He slowed down a bit, turned around and waved back. That just got the girls smiling wider and beaming all the more with joy. Our Champion fell in love.
The image of those two girls - smiling and waving at him, filled his mind. It kept coming up as rode the rest of the distance and he simply couldn’t take that smile of his face.
He realized the little joy he shared in those few seconds. Maybe those girls will forget all about him in a day or two. But yet, for that short little time they were happy.
It took very little to get those girls to smile and practically nothing to make those smiles wider. Just a wave and a smile.
Champion felt good about himself. He had just realized a way of better living. Probably the easiest, cheapest and healthiest way to happiness. For all the times that he has read or heard – happiness increases by sharing it, he witnessed it in its truest of forms that day. He even participated in that exercise.
So, having highlighted this point in his book of lessons, our Champion set out to experiment some more.
The next day, en-route to work, Champion came across several police check posts. Republic Day was coming up, so he figured that the law enforcing body was being extra cautious.
Time for a little experiment in his new lesson.
Being on a bike, he did not really need to go around the barricades. Instead he just squeezed through them. Kind of taken aback by and, maybe, in awe of this rider, the cops let him pass. Of course they did scrutinize him and his body language but then they couldn't stop him. For there was this big fat smile on his face. It wasn’t a smile feigning mockery but in fact that of a pleasant greeting. One could even call it a very wide sheepish smile. Champion looked them in the eye, smiled and moved on. However, he did notice some of them give him that nod of acknowledgment and appreciation. He also claims that one even smiled back.
His experiment proved successful.
In the blistering heat, with their tiresome job breathing down their necks, it took very little to remind those uniformed men that they too are human beings like us and that we all share something very small in common - that little key to happiness.
