Champion of Cycle Diaries
The other day I was walking down a street near my place when I overheard a kid tell his friend: “Abey tune woh rider ko dekha hai kya? Pura helmet aur reflectingwala goggles pehna tha. Kya solid dikh raha tha yaar. Zoom karke nikal gaya!” Interestingly the friend did know who he was talking about: “Haan yaar. Maine bhi usko dekha tha. Yellowwala helmet hai na? Aur kya jakaas laal white aur kaala colourwala cycle hai uska. Townshipmein kidhar toh rehta hai kya?”
Chapter VI: The Urban Legend.
After a rather long gap our Champion is finally riding again. The roadie genes have kicked in and he’s splattering muck all over his bag and helmet this monsoon.
I hear he has fallen in love again. I think he either fetishes on the white-black-red colour scheme or probably likes the rumours of the unknown geared-up rider from his area. Only this time his ride is faster and lighter.
The Champion is riding an LA Sovereign Urbano now. I hear the machine is brilliance refined and put together in the form of a road-bike. I can only imagine the thrill in his warped racer head when speeding down the highway at 50+kmph! Or the smirk on his face when shuffling gears and winding his way through traffic!
He has probably found true love this time. For when I asked him what he likes the most about this bike he said: “The bike suits me. Its like me.. in the form of a bike! This baby understand me.. my mentality, way of thought, temperament.. everything.. it just kinda knows what I will do next and starts doing it.. premonition of sorts! and ya, most importantly (he smirks and says), I know what this bike suits the most - my attitude!"
Enough said. I’ve come to conclude this rider likes the urban legend tag he’s got. I know now that he gets a kick out of it. When he rides through his area and a trail of little children follow him and the elders exclaim in surprise/awe, he smiles to himself. His smile says it all.

ReplyDeleteOh god! This reminded of my childhood days (which lasted till Std.10 btw). Nothing fancy, a hercules followed by the ladybird. And yet,it gave me a kick which I only later realized. Later when I didn't have it.
ReplyDelete50+ kmph! Now that, that is something! :D I would have probably stared and screamed out loud noticing you on some highway. I do that!
