Persistence of Vision
Physiologically, it is a term used to describe the brain registering a sight which does not exist, atleast not presently - something that existed a fraction of time ago. It is the phenomenon of the eye by which an afterimage is thought to persist in the retina. I’d like to think of the human mind succumbing to a similar such phenomenon, the only difference being - this ‘fraction of time’ is as disillusive as the other wonders churned out by our ever so creative minds.
As a species we are always fascinated by novelty, be it a living or non-living dimension. The very fact that our mind can toy with the freshness of something new, alone excites us. The joys of the toying come in later. Sadly and not so shockingly, we sideline all forms of intelligence when our adolescent minds thrill away, unquestioning – unanswering.
Then with time comes reality, the latter confronting us and forcing us to retrospect the damage done. Machines and emotions falter, degrade and eventually break when unattended. Then the regret sows itself deep into our hearts, making us feel criminal of our deeds. We cannot even argue with our vile mind for it, as always, shirks all responsibility.
And so, we live with another grief nested within us. Until and unless we choose to address it – a task which undoubtedly is the most difficult in this world.
